Punk Uncovered

print, typography, layout

With this project I had to design and layout a magazine spread for an article on how the Punk movement affected record cover design. The design needed to reflect the nature of the article (Punk record cover design), but with a more contemporary look.

The typeface used is Serifa, this Slab-Serif has an aggressive, masculine look that suites the punk theme, while also looking good both as a display (bold) and body font (readability). The paragraphs have been broken up into disjointed blocks, this was so that they would feel as if they had been cutout of magazines and newspapers and pasted together (ransom note).

Emphasis has been placed on certain paragraphs, words or quotes with the use of reversed text out of jagged ‘cutout’ black shapes. A minimalistic colour palette was used and some of the images had a halftoned effect applied to them to reinforce the photocopied look.
