I have been hooked on Book Art for quiet some time and one artist who always blows my mind is Brian Dettmer.
Brian Dettmer carves into books revealing the artwork inside, creating complex layered three-dimensional sculptures.
He uses exacto knives, tweezers, and other surgical tools to expose the inner structure of books for closer examination.

Dettmer's alteration of preexisting media — such as old books, maps, record albums, and cassette tapes — is done to create new, transformed works of visual fine art.
Below is a look inside Brian Dettmer's Atlanta studio, where he creates his unique book dissections and other artworks. Here you can see dettmer’s studio and some of his projects before they were complete.

Dettmer begins to create these dissected books by sealing their edges and slowly carving out his creations. using surgical tools he reveals certain elements and hides others.

The completed pieces expose new relationships of a book's internal elements exactly where they have been since their original conception.
